JEFF FARWELL (Wrestling, Cross Country, Track, Golf)

Class of 1982


Jeff Farwell was Cary High School's ATHLETE OF THE YEAR in 1982 and achieved many outstanding distinctions during his time at Cary:

  • Cross Country: Three Time Varsity Letterman, Two Time Co-Captain and MVP
  • Track: Three Time Varsity Letterman
  • Golf: Three Time Varsity Letterman
  • Wrestling: Three Time Varsity Letterman and State Champion (1982)


Farwell was the first state champion for coach Jerry Winterton, winning the 1982 State Championship  title back when there was just one wrestling champion per weight class across the state. He went undefeated his senior year (32-0) despite having knee surgery three weeks prior to the season.  Jeff's other wrestling accomplishments include:

  • WRAL Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler (1981)
  • Co-Captain and MVP (1982)


Jeff went on to be a four-year starter at the University of Chicago and was a conference champion in college. He graduated with a degree in Economics and continued at the University of Chicago as an assistant wrestling coach from 1986-1996.
